Preview: Charlotte Bobcats at New Jersey Nets 11/3/2010

Hope you guys don’t have an Election Day hangover.  I know I partied til the break of dawn.  TEA PARTAY!  Riiiight.  Election nerds are like sports nuts except without the athleticism and the Political stuff is a little less serious.  One thing we can all agree on, at least here at BOBCATS Planet, well we can agree we care about the Bobcats.  Whether we like it, we’re hopeful or not, want the coach fired, want the players traded…whatever, we share a concern (wrong word at 0-3) for the Charlotte Bobcats.  So shake off the confetti you Republicans and cheer up you Democrats, or whatever happened in your particular district, and I’m officially regretting I started this post about politics, MOVING ON!

Bobcats travel to New Jersey, the Garden State to face the Nets Wednesday Night.  These two teams, on the outside looking in are going in opposite directions.  The Nets won their first two contests before being brought back to Earth by the Heat Sunday afternoon.  The 1PM tipoff with the Giants on a bye but the Jets at home left a few empty seats against the ever amazing and intriguing Miami Heat.  17086 in an arena that holds 18,500 for basketball?  Tsk, tsk Mr. Prokhorov.  Wonder what the story is?  Either way, the Heat looked unstoppable and on a few plays I saw in the highlights, Brook Lopez among others were thinking the same thing.  Playing some of that olé defense with Lebron driving the lane, yep, down by 12 basically from the beginning, yep, I’d be doing the same thing.

The previous 2 games for New Jersey were wins by 3 over Detroit and by 6 against Sacramento.  While they don’t look like much, it took until like mid-December for them to get to 2 last year.  4 straight home games to start the year for a young team in flux must be nice.  ”In flux” there is an understatement.  They got a new owner, new coach, 5 free agents and 3 rookies, new arena (for them) and then the constant rumors regarding Carmello Anthony.  All of that going on and yet there is seemingly no sense of panic or confusion.  As an observer, it looks like this ship in stormy seas has an excellent rudder as well as a solid captain.  Between Mikhail Prokhorov and Avery Johnson, they have some proven strength.  Avery in his 3 and a half years in Dallas has the best winning percentage of any coach in history.  Prokhorov is a BBBBBBBillionaire, with a B.  While you might think MJ is a big deal, and he is, Prokhorov is “Pushing for Draconian Labor Reform” in his native Russia.  Yeah, I had to look it up too.  Dude is seriously serious.

I gotta get the smell of the Nets’ jock out of my nose before somebody accuses me of…wait, I just accused myself.  There are interesting things happening in Newark/East Rutherford/Brooklyn/Moscow? I can’t help but be inquisitive and look into it.  Either way, onto the game.  The Bobcats traveled back from Milwaukee Sunday, spent a couple days in Charlotte and headed back out again to New Jersey.  I know that because I follow Sherron Collins, Larry Brown just said “Who?”  I said, “You know the chunky dude that played at Kansas?”  ”Point guard?”  ”Yeah, LB, you still got those pills for your memory?”  ”I have a 9 year old child.”

The Bench: Bobcats win against the Nets (105-95)

Posted by on Apr 12, 2010 in Gerald Henderson, Headline, New Jersey Nets | 1 comment

Tonight’s game was brought to you by the Bobcats bench. Only one starter, Raymond Felton, played for as many as thirty minutes tonight as Coach Larry Brown got his starters some much needed rest before the play-offs. Seven ‘Cats players scored in double figures and three of those came in from the bench. Gerald Henderson, 14 points, Tyrus Thomas, 13 points, and DJ Augustine with 11 points made resting the starters a possibility for Coach Brown. Tyson Chandler, 7 points, and Stephen Graham, 5 points, rounded out the solid offensive output for the ‘Cats bench scoring. A night that sees any team’s bench put up 50 points is a good night. With the play-offs starting soon, this was the best kind of night for a strong bench performance giving starters with niggling injuries much needed rest. Gerald Henderson was the big story, scoring one point shy of his season high. Henderson also contributed 7 rebounds with his 14 points and accomplished this in just 20:38 minutes of playing time. The ‘Cats also know who their first round play-off opponent will be, the Orlando Magic, since the Miami Heat won tonight, clinching the Bobcats as the seventh place team in the Eastern Conference.

With four of the ‘Cats starters scoring in double figures coupled with the strong bench performance, the Magic can’t be excited to start the play-offs against these Bobcats. Usually a major weakness, free-throw shooting was a strength tonight for Charlotte, as they shot 94.1% (16-17) for the game. Stephen Jackson led all ‘Cats scorers with 17 points and also had the most boards for the ‘Cats with nine. Although the Bobcats allowed the Nets to catch-up and go ahead a few times, the ‘Cats refused to give the Nets enough traction to pull more than a point or two ahead of them. The ‘Cats looked strong for most of the game and seem to be peaking at the right time.

The Good:

The bench with G. Henderson, T. Thomas, and DJ Austine leading the way.

Seven players scored in double figures.

Free throw shooting (94.1%).

The Bad:

Lazy passing at times.

Defense allowed too many points in the paint (52).

The Ugly:

Nothing really.

Final season game for the Bobcats: Wednesday 4/14/10 8:00pm vs. the Chicago Bulls

New Jersey Nets defeat the Charlotte Bobcats… AGAIN

Today’s game is brought to you by the word abomination

a?bom?i?na?tion

1. anything abominable; anything greatly disliked or abhorred.
2. intense aversion or loathing; detestation: He regarded lying with abomination.
3. a vile, shameful, or detestable action, condition, habit, etc.:

Why is it that we are the only team in the NBA capable of making the 4-infinity 5-infinity New Jersey Nets look like the showtime Lakers??? I don’t understand it and the longer I think about it, the more it makes my head hurt. How does this hot garbage happen to us?

Maybe it’s Brook Lopez who pounded the Cats for 16 points and 3 blocked shots. To quote BCP member Nata Fresh

Okay..so every time Brook Lopez does this kind of damage against us…I die a little inside..

Well Nata, I think there are quite a few that have Bobcats fans that have that same agonizing feeling when they see Lopez do his thing and realize that we passed him up for DJ.

Maybe it’s a case of losing our composure against these guys. Take a look at BCP member Spectre‘s interpretation of a first half exchange between Stephen Jackson and the ref that just called a delay of game on him

Jax: “Delay of game? Dude I’m Stephen Muther***king Jackson!” Give me the technical baby!”
Whatever the reason was behind this abomination, it isn’t good enough. There is no excuse to give a team that is on pace for the worst record in the history of professional basketball a win… And letting it happen twice in one season is unfathomable.
Someone talk me down from this ledge…

Welcome to 24 hours of NetsPlanet!!!

Posted by on Dec 5, 2009 in Featured, New Jersey Nets | 2 comments

Apparently there was some loudmouth (ummm that would be me) on BobcatsPlanet that proclaimed that if the sorry assed Nets beat the Bobcats tonight then they would turn BobcatsPlanet into NetsPlanet for 24 hours. Well…. heh heh heh what do you know, Those ingrates managed to step up and get a win against the Cats tonight leaving me and the rest of the BCP faithful having to subject ourselves to the  taunts and ridicule of New Jersey Nets fans.

Well we’re all men here ( although we still have our doubts about Brook Lopez… He does have a girl’s name  for crying out loud ) so we are going to keep our word and take our medicine as bitter and disgusting as it may be.

Go ahead Nets fans ( if there are any of you that still exist ) give us your best shot, we can take it.

Who needs to score 80+ points anyway???

Posted by on Nov 3, 2009 in DJ Augustin, Featured, Gerald Wallace, New Jersey Nets | 1 comment

Not the Bobcats. They scored just 79 points monday night against the Nets, but still managed to walk away with an 11 point win. This game was not pretty to watch ( The Bobcats had a 10 point first quarter… The Nets trumped that with a 7 point third ) but a win is a win is a win. And 2-2 feels a lot better than 1-3.

DJ Augustin was large this game with 21 points and 3 steals off the bench. Gerald Wallace was a grown man with 24 points and 20 rebounds (who knew that he was going to channel Dennis Rodman this season),  He is averaging a ridiculous 14 rebounds per game!

Charlotte Bobcats / New Jersey Nets linkage

Posted by on Apr 14, 2009 in Featured, New Jersey Nets | 0 comments

Last night on the road against the New Jersey Nets, the Bobcats lost their 3rd straight and 4th out of their last 5 games.  It was an intersting game for a couple of reasons: Brook Lopez lost his mind and almost put up a 20/20 game and  Larry Brown gave heavy minutes to many of his bench players.  Linkage below.

The Charlotte Observer

“It was us coming through at the right time,” said Hayes, who finished with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including a perfect 3-for-3 from long range. “We wanted to exploit Sean May at the top of the key. Coach Brown kept switching assignments with him on me and Bobby (Simmons) and whoever he was on, we went to.”
