I wrote a little blog about this some time ago and I thought it would be fun to share it with you.
I’ve always been a huge fan of Tyrus Thomas and over the years I’ve had to pull my hair out and watch in agony as Boris “Jellybean” Diaw got the starting nod and minutes over our young talented forward. I can understand how having a 9 million dollar contract sitting on a bench is pretty useless, but seriously? I do however expect him to start this season. but my question today is have we been holding him back or is he still more potential than talent. I won’t be going on and on about this right now but out of boredom I’d like to share a few fun facts and then let you can decide.
In 66 games and 2 starts with the Bobcats over the last two seasons, Tyrus Thomas has been putting up roughly 10ppg, 6rpg, 1.5bpg, 0.8spg in about 21 minutes of playing time behind Diaw as PF. all together he has played 30+ minutes 12 out of the 66 games. Last season he only played 30+ minutes 5 times. In those 5 games he was avg:
21.2 points, 9 rebounds, 2.4 blocks, 0.8 steals, 3.2 personal fouls, 2.4 turnovers, shooting .573 from the field and adding a free throw percentage of 74 percent (18-24) in 32.2 minutes of playing time.
The Year before he topped 30 mins 8 times, averaging 15 points, 8.4 rebounds. 2.4 blocks, 1.6 steals, 3.4 personal fouls, 2.3 turnovers a .575 shooting percentage in 32.3 minutes of play.
In this case: his career average with Charlotte when playing 30 minutes or more, is:
18.1 ppg, 8.7 rpg, 2.4 bpg, 1.2 spg, 3.3 pf, 2.4 to’s shooting 58% from the field adding 75% free-throw shooting in 40-53 free-throws made/attempts in 32.2 minutes played.
(with the Bulls he avg: 15.6 ppg, 9 rpg, 2.4 bpg, 1.5 spg shooting 53% from the field adding a 78% free-throw percentage given 30+ minutes in 50 games)
What are your thoughts on Tyrus now?

good post. good statistics to back up arguments. i was not aware of his production when getting 30+ minutes. my opinion not using stats but the eye test, is that he is the type of player that seems to take too much off the table of other players to get his stats. he is a black hole type player when he touches the ball it stops with him. he is ok on the defensive end but i think he is a “good stats on a bad team” type player.
i wonder if brett over on QCH has analyzed the team/lineup +/- #’s and other stats when he is on the floor and in those games where he gets 30+ min’s to see if it validates or refutes my eye test opinion.
I think this season is his golden opportunity. The minutes are right there in front of him. By the end of this season, none of us will have any doubts about what type of player he is.
If Tyrus had the potential to be our next allstar Point Guard, the black hole thing would be a serious problem. And of course, if we want our potentially best scorer not to take shots, I’d see the problem with this.
But does it hurt that he takes shots if he is 50+ % from the field? someone has to be the teams leading scorer, I don’t mind it to be him in the future. I think he feed and explode if he became a star in the NBA, maybe a douchebag but still a star with the ability to win games.
I don’t know about you, but I could name a few immature stars that I wish we could have for a few years.
Hmm. These stats are from his 30+ minute games. And watching the last two season closely, i’d say its a mxture of the rock stopping with him, and him taking care of business when the rest of the guys are asleep.
On days where we were losing big, and Diaw needed his beauty sleep before an important game, it seemed to be tyrus who took care of business and lifted the team.
It doesnt seem to be about the stats with this guy really. If it was, and he was as immature as many would say why has he been so quiet playing leftover minutes from diaw in his last 2 years?.
maybe he just wants to win?
Ziggy has it right. This is the year we find out if he has what it takes. The numbers do have merit, but like Chef I wonder if it has to do with him being on a bad team.
I believe he can be a starting PF, he has the athleticism, and I think with a little more work could have a solid mid range game. His problem seems to be maturity and keeping his cool.
I think to some extent TT got himself into foul trouble so playing 30+ mins a night is not always possible. But it has been highlighted before, when he plays he puts up numbers
I agree with Ziggy, at the end of this season we will know what he is all about..
I’ve always been a supporter of Tyrus, good to see the stats to back up my love for the beast.
Yes Ziggi, time will tell for sure. But do you think this season is a “break or bust” season for Thomas?
And with more big men to back him up taking some of the defensive pressure off his shoulders, don’t you think his fouls per game will drop, James?
By looking at his season avg. since he got here regardless of minutes, wouldnt you think his potential on the offensive side is just as interesting?
I sure would love to have a 20pt, 10rebs 2.5 blocks per game guy for the rest of his contract.
Yes, I think it is break or bust for TT.
I’m pulling for him, but I think if he doesn’t consistently produce this season then most people are going to write him off.
