For those that have been paying attention, yes, I have been on a ‘who should they draft’ kick for the last month. With the team doing as poorly as they did, it was getting to be a little too depressing to talk about it. At least in the end the team did one thing right and got rid of Paul Silas.
Going forward (since it is too depressing to look back) it appears that the Charlotte Bobcats are virtually guaranteed at least one talented player. Odds are good they’ll get the No 1 pick and highly likely that they will at least get the No 2 or 3.
What if they the basketball Gods decide to spit on Jordan the Owner since he was so successful as Jordan the Player and the ‘Cats get a later pick in the lottery (all the way down at 4)?
Most of the predictions and mocks that I’ve read all said the same person is expected to go No 6—North Carolina small forward Harrison Barnes. On the off chance that the Bobcats happen to be at the 4th spot or if they trade down a few slots, should they pick him and be happy?
Absolutely not.
I didn’t watch much North Carolina ball last year or the year before (I live in Indiana; I think there’s a law against watching anyone but IU and Butler). To talk about this guy I had to do my research.
Everyone says he has the body of a NBA small forward at 6-foot 8-inches and 210 pounds. Most people call him athletic (there was a couple that said he lacked athleticism). The 7-foot wing span is nice. People said one thing in many ways, but when you cut through the crap all they were saying was he’s a good shooter.
However, I think the negatives these guys mentioned are pretty bad:
- Struggles as a playmaker; can’t create his own shots
- Lacks killer instinct and leadership ability
- Still needs to improve perimeter play
- Needs a go-to move; too one-dimensional
- Afraid of contact
- Lacks explosive finish and first step
So essentially he can shoot, just don’t ask him to do anything else.
The word on this kid is that he has yet to live up to the high school hype, but his shot is so pretty he’s destined for a great NBA career. I don’t see it. From everything I’ve read he sounds more like he belongs on Venice Beach hustling games with Sidney Deane and Billy Hoyle.
Harrison—you should have stayed in college a couple more years. You need the work.

Absolutely. I’d take Barnes with either the 3rd or 4th pick depending on who is available.
i would probably take him 4th to these players: davis, beal, drummond. if they 1,2,3 and we are sitting at 4th, I would try to trade down 2 spots and take him 6th.
I watched some of this guys youtube clips. I didn’t see anything that was so impressive to warrant the praise you guys are giving him. He might be able to shoot, but otherwise he’s worthless. Kid should have stayed in college.
No way. He has bust written all over him. You highlighted it all, no killer instinct, too one dimensional, disappears at times. We want to draft our franchise player, not someone who has “all the tools” but has yet to apply them.
Thank you! Glad to have someone agree with me!
Youtube his highlights at Virginia Tech on 1.19.12. In this draft, the number 12 guy could easily be as good as the number 2 guy. If we don’t get Davis, I wouldn’t mind TRADING DOWN to get Barnes AND another guy. He does have a pretty shot and an NBA body. And those things matter. Draftexpress had a recent article indicating he had some defensive potential. When people interview this kid in workouts he will win some of them over. I would be thrilled getting Barnes at 6 and any number of guys below him. Barnes and Lillard? Barnes and Lamb? I’d rather have those two at lower picks than any player we could get at pick number 2. I DO agree that I would not grab Barnes with a top 4 pick. But Barnes at 6ish AND somebody else 9-12 could bring a real offensive boost to Bobcatland.
Hmm. Good point. As a later pick along with someone I could see going after him. I think the key to his career will be starting with the right coach.
In the middle of the season, Barnes was looking like a top 4 pick and hovering around 40% from the college 3. Then he had a slump and things dipped. I like to think of him now as a cheap stock to be had that could go up in value again. He can shoot, and he has the muscle to body up on people if he chooses. He has some mobility. There are some tools there. I think it’s a little harsh to call him worthless outside of shooting. Indications are that he is a character guy off the court, and that matters. Again, grab him and another guy lower if you can pull it off.
I read a ton on this guy, and even though most of them said he was a top six pick at the least, most had nothing good to say about him with the exception of his shot.
If we do go the “Barnes and another guy” route, it’d be nice to grab some aggressive, alpha male type guy with him. Do Lillard and Jeremy Lamb fit that bill? Dare I say reunite him with 6’4″ Kendall Marshall who knows how to set shooters up all day long? (Assuming we lose DJ). Barnes and Zeller fit our positional needs nicely, but are either one of them enough of a go-to, aggressive type? Probably not. Who knows, maybe Sullinger will dip. Would it be possible (and wise) to grab Sullinger AND Barnes in the lower lottery?? (I still gotta see Sullinger’s measurements before I make a final judgement on him). Thanks for the articles, Travis!
I think the “finding a niche” article at the top of his draftexpress profile is a pretty good assessment:

Is he Marvin Williams 2.0?
Davis then what ? If we can trade 2nd and 31 for say a four and a 10 with NO you got to do it ,. I really think Barnes is the best scoring S/F in the draft . Its tons of talent left at 10.
The guy played the last half of last year on a bum ankle and being a jump shooter its very hard to be productive with a bad wheel. Youtube the game he played against Clemson in 2011 Acc tournament when he dropped 40 and tell me you didn’t see anything special. kid is a stud!!
To use a recent baseball analogy–White Sox pitcher Phillip Humber looked pretty special for one game earlier this season. How well has he done since?
One game means nothing.
